Surface Preparation &
Protective Coatings

Preserving the integrity of pipelines, tanks, steel structures and industrial assets begins long before the final coating is applied. At Akwaflow, we approach surface preparation and protective coating from first principles, using the science of adhesion, corrosion control and environmental exposure to deliver durable, inspection-ready protection systems for critical infrastructure.

Why Surface Preparation
Comes First

Protective coating performance depends fundamentally on substrate condition. Oil, grease, rust, oxides, moisture, salts and dust interfere with adhesion and create early failure points. A properly prepared surface provides the mechanical anchor and chemical readiness required for a coating system to perform over its intended design life.

From a first-principles standpoint, corrosion protection is about isolating steel from oxygen, moisture and aggressive electrolytes, while adhesion is about creating both mechanical keying and strong interfacial bonding. This is why Akwaflow never treats surface preparation as a secondary activity. It is the foundation of long-term asset reliability.

Our teams select preparation standards, coating systems and inspection methods based on actual operating conditions including temperature, humidity, soil chemistry, water exposure, mechanical loading and maintenance strategy.

Methods of Surface
Preparation

Akwaflow deploys the right preparation method based on substrate type, contamination level, environmental restrictions, coating specification and project scale. We do not rely on assumptions. Every preparation route is chosen to achieve the cleanliness, profile and surface condition needed for lasting coating adhesion.

Solvent, Manual and Power-Tool Cleaning

Where contamination is limited or blasting is impractical, we use solvent cleaning, hand-tool cleaning and power-tool cleaning to remove oils, loose rust, loose scale and visible debris. These methods are appropriate where adhesion demands are moderate and surface profile requirements are limited.

Abrasive Blasting

For high-performance systems on steel, abrasive blasting remains the benchmark. It removes rust, old coatings and mill scale while generating the anchor profile required for strong coating bond strength. Akwaflow manages media selection, profile control, dust containment and cleanliness inspection to meet project specifications.

Hydroblasting

In environments where dust, spent abrasive or adjacent equipment sensitivity is a concern, hydroblasting provides an effective alternative. High-pressure water jetting removes contaminants and deteriorated coatings with reduced solid waste generation, making it valuable for environmentally sensitive or operationally constrained facilities.

Industrial cleaning and blasting operations

Protective Coating Systems

After preparation, the coating system must be matched to service environment, mechanical exposure, design life and compatibility requirements. Akwaflow supports specification, application and quality control across a range of industrial coating technologies.

Fusion Bonded Epoxy (FBE)

High-performance corrosion protection for pipelines and steel assets requiring strong adhesion and durable barrier performance.

3LPE / 3LPP Systems

Three-layer polyethylene or polypropylene systems designed for demanding mechanical protection and long-term buried or submerged service.

Liquid Epoxy & Polyurethane

Versatile coating systems for field joints, tanks, structures and process facilities where application flexibility and UV resistance matter.

Internal Flow Coatings

Low-friction internal coatings that support hydraulic efficiency, corrosion resistance and reduced wax or deposit build-up.

Pipeline coating and inspection

Pipeline, Tank & Structural
Coating Applications

Beyond pipelines, our coating solutions extend to tanks, marine structures, process skids, steel frames, plant equipment and water infrastructure. We specify and manage systems designed for corrosion resistance, chemical exposure, UV stability, abrasion resistance and, where required, thermal or fire-protection performance.

Pipeline coating activities may include external mill-applied systems, field-joint coating, internal flow coating and inspection support through construction and operations. For tanks and structures, coating selection considers immersion conditions, splash-zone exposure, weathering, maintenance intervals and the client's long-term asset strategy.

  • External corrosion protection systems
  • Internal lining and flow efficiency coatings
  • Tank floor, shell and roof coating systems
  • Structural steel and marine-grade protective coatings
  • UV-resistant and chemically resistant topcoat systems

Inspection, Quality Control
and Traceability

High-quality preparation and coating depend on disciplined inspection. Akwaflow uses standards-based verification to ensure that cleanliness, anchor profile, environmental conditions, film thickness, cure state and coating continuity all meet specification before handover.

Our QA/QC process is built to reduce premature failures, prevent rework and give clients confidence that asset protection systems have been applied correctly, tested properly and documented thoroughly.

Surface cleanliness verification to ISO 8501 / NACE / SSPC requirements
Anchor profile measurement using replica tape and profile gauges
Surface temperature, steel temperature and dew point checks
Soluble salt, dust and contamination testing
Dry film thickness (DFT) verification
Holiday detection using wet sponge or spark testing
Adhesion testing and cure verification

Sustainability, Safety
and Local Content

Surface preparation and coating operations must deliver protection without compromising people, communities or the environment. Akwaflow incorporates sustainable thinking through coating-system optimisation, controlled waste generation, lower-emission application practices and careful process selection for each project environment.

Safety remains central to execution. Abrasive blasting, solvent handling, isocyanates, heated surfaces and high-pressure water systems all demand trained personnel, correct PPE, ventilation control, safe-work procedures and strong supervision. Our teams operate with disciplined HSE planning aligned to CASHES expectations and recognized coating standards.

We are equally committed to local content development in Nigeria and West Africa, building domestic capacity through training, project participation, local sourcing where feasible and knowledge transfer in coating inspection, preparation methods and asset preservation best practice.

Digital inspection and future coating technologies

Future Outlook:
Digitalisation & Smarter Preservation

The future of asset protection is increasingly digital. Inspection workflows are being strengthened by drones, cloud-based QA dashboards, digital traceability systems, laser scanning and predictive maintenance tools. Emerging material innovations such as smart coatings, self-healing systems and advanced polymer technologies also continue to improve long-term reliability.

At Akwaflow, we adopt innovation with engineering discipline. Technology is valuable only when grounded in the realities of corrosion science, adhesion mechanics, operating conditions and lifecycle economics. That first-principles mindset helps us apply new tools intelligently and deliver practical value for every client.
